Malakwa Community Association Agenda

Recent Community Projects and information from our previous meeting:

The membership voted to sign a new 5 year lease on the Malakwa School building with North Okanagan School District No. 83.

Membership voted to keep the decommissioned Malakwa  fire truck for use in community parades and displays.  – The decommissioned fire truck is being stored in a building at Hyde Sawmill.

Malakwa Centennial Park – Work will continue on the inside of the concession booth.

Malakwa Thrift Shop has closed for the season it will  reopen each Thursday, 10:00 – 4:00 in the spring.

Yard Creek Camp Ground  is closed for the season.  The Camp Ground had a busy season, revenue reflected the campfire ban and no firewood was sold this summer.

Malakwa Preschool is open the Preschool is very active and welcomes new families.  A fundraiser is planned, the preschool members appreciate your support.  Please watch for details, they will be advertised soon.  The Malakwa Playschool now has a very informative website.  You may access it here by clicking on this link:   http://malakwaplayschool.business.site/

Resource Centre– Janet spoke about programs currently being offered by the Eagle Valley Community Support Society. These include Shuswap Better at Home, Connecting to Families, Small Group Discussions for Low Income Families and Income Tax filing by trained volunteers.  Last year, 266 income tax returns were prepared.  The Okanagan College students meeting here Monday through Friday since November, will be finished their course in mid-March.  Janet has sent in a grant application on behalf of the Malakwa Preschool, to the BC Gaming Branch.  Resource Centre staff will provide details of upcoming Malakwa events in the form of a newsletter delivered to all mailboxes except those refusing the category of “junk” mail.  Information about events hosted by other community groups can be added to the newsletter.

Fire Dept. – Andy reported that there have been 5 callouts since the last meeting. He introduced the new command team with himself as Chief for a 22 month period, Deputy Chief Alex and Training Officer James.  Joanne Held will continue the school programs as Fire Prevention Officer.  There is a high level of participation in training by the 19 volunteers.

Gospel Church – Lawrence reported that BG Club on Tuesdays has as many as 29 kids attending. Souper Saturday will wrap up by the end of March and there is a church service on Good Friday.

New members are always welcome and Malakwa Community members are encouraged to join the Association and help with the many projects that are happening!  Membership is only $10.00 per year.  The Association contributes to many community projects throughout the year and maintains the Malakwa website www.malakwa.ca
